Louisville Domestic Violence Attorney
Domestic violence is a serious matter. Let me begin by stating that no one needs to stay in an abusive relationship. Our community offers resources to protect victims of domestic violence. If this is you’re a victim, please seek help immediately.
Family courts are often faced with cases involving allegations of abuse. Louisville divorce attorneys help clients to substantiate these claims and seek protection under the law for themselves and their children.
At the same time, claims that a spouse presents a danger to oneself or the children shouldn’t be made lightly. If your spouse (or ex-spouse) is attempting to make claims of domestic violence, you need to inform your attorney.
Jefferson County has 3 levels of protective orders:
- Emergency Protective Order (EPO)
- Domestic Violence Order (DVO)
- Interpersonal Protection Order (IPO)
EPOs and DVOs are used in circumstances where a couple is married, living together or have children together. The IPO is used for people in dating relationships. If you’re being stalked, an IPO is used. There are other situations, but that’s a common example. The IPO is a recent addition in Jefferson County.
Victims of abuse should contact the Domestic Violence Intake Center.
It’s open 24-hours, 7 days a week.
The staff will help to determine which type of protective order is needed. Domestic violence doesn’t just refer to physical abuse to a spouse, child or dating partner. It also includes violence towards pets and destruction of property. The phone number for the Intake Center is: (502) 595-4697. The office is located at 600 W. Jefferson St., on the first floor of the Hall of Justice.
Domestic violence charges an impact custody and visitation. The court works hard to protect people. Attorneys have to be very careful when these allegations are made before and/or during a family law case. The risk of further harm or even death may escalate during an emotional divorce proceeding.
